Chapter 18

Shanice

Melvin: Shanice, I’m finally out. Wanna meet up with me? I know just the place.

Me: Melvin... I don’t think I’m in the mood for that right now.

Melvin: Huh? Did something happen? I don’t know if I’m right about this, but you’re making me suspect that something bad just happened to you.

Me: There was something... and I’m not sure I want to talk to you about it. I mean, you’re still a stranger to me.

Melvin: Then, let’s not be strangers anymore. Come see me. If you don’t like the company, then maybe you’d like the food.

Me: I already had dinner. I don’t want to eat anything right now.

Melvin: How about a drink, then? Surely you can’t pass that up.

Me: A drink would be nice, yeah.

Melvin: And you’re sure you don’t want to tell me about what it is that is making you feel so distraught? I worry about you, Shanice. I know we don’t know each other much, but I still care about you.

I bit my bottom lip. Part of me really wanted to tell him all about it, but I needed to keep in mind what this thing really was – just me and Melvin going to have a date, and nothing more than that. Whether that was going to develop into something else, I didn’t know, but I wasn’t going to make a fool of myself thinking that Melvin could be something more to me.

Me: No. I’m okay. I feel okay.

Melvin: You really don’t sound okay. Let me call you.

And he did, the phone ringing all of sudden while the taxi driver took a sharp turn, my body falling against the door. “Hey, watch the road,” I complained.

“Sorry, it won’t happen again, milady,” he said, the car now following a straight road. It wasn’t going to take me much longer to get home, and when getting there the driver was going to have all sorts of questions he couldn’t ask me.

If she’s that rich, then why is she coming to this dump?

But if he knew his place and kept in mind he didn’t have anything to do with that, then he was going to keep his mouth shut, and some silence was all I needed at the moment. That was all I needed because I was going to hear Melvin’s thick voice one more time, and he seemed so eager to talk to me right now.

“Tell me exactly what happened, Shanice. Don’t keep anything hidden from me.”

“I can’t. I don’t want to talk about it.”

Someone finding out about my true identity was one of the things that hurt me the most, a knot forming in my heart. A tear rolling down my left cheek, I didn’t know what to tell Melvin right now.

Did he really think he was that close to me to the point of thinking I was going to share something that important about my life with him?

I didn’t know, but he was making me think that was the case.

“Just tell me. The longer you keep that thing inside your head, the sooner you’re going to explode.
